One of the most expansive areas in Houston is the southwest region, which encompasses part of Harris County and Fort Bend County. The far western part of the area is dotted with ranches and horse-boarding farms.
Several master-planned communities, such as New Territory and Lake Olympia, combined with consistently top-rated school districts, make this a popular area. Arcola, Meadows, Missouri City, Stafford, Sugar Land, Richmond and Rosenberg are incorporated townships of Fort Bend County. 
Residents on the southwest side enjoy convenient proximity to downtown Houston and the Galleria area via the Southwest Freeway (U.S. 59). As a testament to its growth, the population of Fort Bend County increased by more than 50 percent from 1980 to 1990. Some of the growth is due to the fact that Fort Bend County is home to several electronics and manufacturing firms. A wide variety of home styles and prices are available in this area, from affordable patio homes to multiacre country home estates.
