Chris Cornell's Florida Home

Unbeknownst to many fans, Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell was a South Floridian through and through.

Of course, the 52-year-old singer of “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoon Man,” who hanged himself after a concert in Detroit Wednesday night, typified the Seattle grunge scene.

But starting in 2011, according to records, mosh pit king Cornell – whose real name was Christopher John Boyle – settled down with his wife and their two children in Miami Beach.

His home for the past six years was a $6 million condo on the 21st floor of the Continuum South Beach, a luxury high-rise complex on the southern tip of Miami Beach.

Cornell never bought the three-bedroom, four-bathroom, 3,000-square-foot apartment with sweeping views on Biscayne Bay.

His rent over the years went from $28,000 to $30,000 a month.

“I don’t know why he never bought a place here,” said the singer’s landlady, 72-year-old Daisy Afrooz. “It seems he had the money. He seemed pretty happy just renting.”

Afrooz said the condo was the home Cornell always came back to after tours and travels.

That's also where he recovered from battles against alcohol addiction.

“He was very unassuming, a wonderful tenant with whom we never had a problem in six years,” she said. “No loud music or parties. A perfect gentleman. We used to see him and his beautiful family at the pool and the restaurant. He was great.”

Afrooz’s grown children, she says, were “thrilled” when they received word Cornell was moving in. She had never heard of him until then.

“Most people at the Continuum knew who he was,” Afrooz said. “But this was the kind of place he could be in peace.

“We’re devastated. He was such a good guy.”
