Bridgeland, a 10,000 acre, master-planned community in northwest Houston under development by General Growth Properties Inc., has selected a team of builders for its first village of new homes, the Shores.

Eleven of Houston's builders will be offering homes priced from the mid-100's to more then 500.  In this initial phase of development, which will include almost 600 homesites in 10 seperate neighborhoods.

The 11 builders are: Darling Homes, David Powers Homes, David Weekly Homes, Hallmark Homes, Highland Homes, Meritage Homes, Partners in Building, Perry Homes, Trendmaker Homes, Village Builders and Whilshire Homes.

Surrounded by more then 100 acres of lakes and feturing bridges, parks and trails, the Shores has been planned to maximze views of water and nature.

Children of the Shores will attend Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, recognized by the Texas Education Agency.

General Growth Properties is the owner of The Woodlands, making the company one of the largest master-planned community developers in Houston.

The Katy Prairie, which includes the land where Bridgeland and other housing developments are planned, is an important refuge for resident and migratory birds. Scientists say prairies and the wetlands found on them improve water quality and absorb rainwater that might otherwise cause flooding.

Executives with General Growth Properties, the company developing Bridgeland, said their plan reflects an understanding of these concerns.

About 3,000 acres — almost a third of the project — will be preserved as open space, said Joseph Necker Jr., the project's general manager.

A site plan provided by Necker shows water features scattered around the project and a number of good-sized tracts preserved as open space.
